Mr. Speaker. as the chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigration. Citizenship. and International Law. I recently wrote to the Secretary of State concerning reports I had received that the State Department was not cooperating with the Justice Department in its effort to identify and deport alleged Nazi war criminals now living in the United States. I was particularly concerned with the State Departments apparent refusal to help locate in foreign countries. especially Russia. witnesses to the reported atrocities. The reply I received to my letter was that the State Department did not think the Russians would agree to allow our people to look for the witnesses in Russia and that there would be no way to authenticate the validity of statements made by persons produced by Soviet authorities.
