I am hopeful. as I am sure all of us are. that the present round of negotiations in the Middle East may once and for all break the vicious chain of war and hostility and take us down the road to a genuine and permanent peace. Until that happy day arrives. we can base our faith in the future on the valiant record of the Israeli people over the past 26 years. Israel is a small country. founded on a dream. Israel has been a haven for the refugees of oppression. for the survivors of Nazi death camps. and for those brave pioneers who believed that the dream of a reborn Israel could be made. They have come from all continents. speaking many tongues. with divergent histories and customs. to build a new and better society. The Israelis have built a proud and progressive society.
