During this time. the Armenians suffered under a policy of active racial and religious discrimination. In spite of repeated attacks on their national consciousness. the Armenians retained their national church. language. and sense of unity. Their vision of freedom and autonomy did not appeal to their absolutist rulers and. by the turn of the 19th century. the Turks had decided to solve the "Armenian problem." The design was to eliminate some 2.000.000 Armenians through mass deportation. starvation. and massacre. It was implemented with brutal success. as uprds of 1.000.000 Armenians were reved. Others survived in the Ottoman pire only by submitting to servitude Turkish homes. fter the defeat of the Turks in rld War I.
