These fragments of information. and the words of the people themselves. are a poignant. meaningful reflection of the courage which these people have. and the brutality of a system which seeks to prevent them from moving. The first testimony comes from the Liner family in Moscow. Bronislav and Marina Liner. and two young children. applied for an exit visa last fall. and were refused in February. They are prominent metallurgists. each holding a doctorate. and were employed by scientific institutes in Moscow. They were immediately fired from their jobs when they applied for an exit visa. The following is an excerpt from a letter they wrote to friends in the United States: we have got rather sad news. On 8.2.1974 Soviet authorities denied our request for visa to Israel. We were told that our leaving USSR is inexpedient for state security reasons. The official refused to answer when they would give to us the permission for leaving for Israel and he refused to explain what he meant speaking about state security.
