Session #93 · 1973–75

Speech #930196602

And perhaps we have raised our hopesand our praisestoo high and are in for some troublesome disillusion as a result. For example: A year after our disengagement. the war in Southeast Asia continues to rage on. with still no light at the end of anybodys tunnel. By official count. there were 818.000 new refugees in South Vietnam during 1973. Hospitals there admitted 43.000 civilian casualties. and upward of 50.000 government and Communist soldiers were killeda larger body count in a single year than all the American war deaths in Vietnam since 1965. And though. thank God. we have stopped throwing away precious American lives in Southeast Asia. we are still throwing away precious American dollars therearound $2 billion a year on new arms. ammunition. and fuelthat is right. fuelfor the military in Indochina.
