In 1939. however. the Soviet Union forced Estonia to sign another treaty permitting Russian troops and bases in the Baltic nation. Although the Soviet Union promised that there would be no further interference in Estonias internal affairs. this promise was never observed. On June 17. 1940. Estonia was invaded and occupied. Under Soviet domination. thousands of Estonians were deported during the 1940s to Siberia and other parts of the Soviet Union. and the country was opened to Russian colontalization. These moves were part of a deliberate policy to destroy the unique Estonian culture and russify Estonia. Although Estonias people have been deprived of freedom. they remain hardworking and industrious.
