National independence. first proclaimed in 1918. lasted only until 1920. when the Soviet Union overran the country. Now. the 48 million Ukrainians. who make up the largest captive nonRussian nation in Eastern Europe and the U.S.S.R.. are still struggling to regain their freedom. While all countries applaud the easing of hostilities between the Soviet Union and the United States and most support increased trade between our nations with free emigration. we in the United States must not forget the Ukrainians and others who are not able to worship as they please or speak out about the policies of their governments. It was these freedoms upon which this country was founded. and we must put these freedoms. for us and for others. ahead of mere economic gains. With the great debates going on in our country over the right of privacy.
