Romania publicly criticized the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Her independence has been illustrated also by the excellent relations she has maintained with Israel during recent years. In that connection. it is interesting to note that more people have emigrated from Romania to Israelover 300.000during the last 20 years than from any other Eastern European country. or from the Soviet Union. Romania. under the leadership of President Ceausescu. has taken a number of steps to foster closer economic ties with Western Europe and the United States. She became a member of the International Monetary Fund. the World Bank and GATT. and was the first country in Eastern Europe to negotiate trade preferences with the European Common Market.
