In the thirtythree months of Allendes tenure as President. all of Chiles parties survived. a free press continued to flourish. and Allende never succumbed to the strong temptations to suspend constitutional government. in 1971 Castro reportedly advised Allende to tighten the reins of executive power against the antigovernment demonstrations organized by the opposing parties. Allende refused. Yet within two weeks after the junta took over in Santiago the Marxist parties were outlawed and other parties "recessed". labor unions were suppressed. books were put to the torch. thousands of Allende loyalists were arrested and untold numbers were killed throughout the country. aliens were rounded up for deportationsome to homelands in which they faced certain imprisonment or death. the press was muzzled. and normal constitutional process was suspended.
