Speaker. thanks to my friend and colleague ED DERWINSKI. it is an honor to join my colleagues in commemorating the 360th anniversary of the arrival in Jamestown. Va.. of the first Polish immigrants on this continent. We pay tribute today to the memories of Michal Lowicki. Zbigniew Stefanski. Jur Mata. Jan Bogdan. Karol Zrenica. and Stanislaw Sadowskithe handful of men who came to America 12 years before the Mayflower and to whom Capt. John Smith gave credit for saving our American colony. As the historian Miecislaus Haiman described in his book. "Poles in America": The beginnings of Virginia also mark the beginnings of the history of Polish immigration in this country. To some degree. Poland influenced the founding of that oldest English colony In America.
