In a good year. these countries produce barely enough to feed their populations. Last year. harvest of export and food crops were down 30 to 80 percent. and between 30 and 90 percent of the national herds were lost because of the lack of water and drying up of pasturelands. The people have had to leave their farms and dried pasturelands in search of food and water. Proud. independent people have been forced to live in refugee camps around the cities. Most of the cities have more than doubled in population in the last few months. It will take several years for many of the nomadic herdsmen to rebuild their herds.
