Speech #930068448

Speaker. the ongoing summit conference between Communist Party Leader Brezhnev and President Nixon has quite naturally absorbed the national attention. Vital as these talks may be for the pursuit of global peace. we should not permit them to overshadow the recent anniversary of the Soviet takeover of Lithuania. On June 15. 1940. the U.S.S.R. forcibly annexed Lithuaniaat the cost of 7 million lives. In its subsequent efforts to bring the captive nation Into line. the U.S.S.R. has resorted to the harshest forms of oppression. to the denial of the most basic civil liberties. even to the deportation of onesixth of the nations people. Yet. despite all these tribulations. the Lithuanian spirit has remained unbroken. In 1941.
