Mr. Speaker. in June of 1940. the Russians. in blatant disregard of all their previous pledges. invaded Lithuania. Latvia. and Estonia. conducting mass deportation to Siberia and causing the death of thousands of innocent people. The sad fate and memory of these victims are very much alive today as we pay tribute to the gallant. freedomloving peoples of the Baltic states who lost their independence and became captive to Communist totalitarian tyranny. When the revolution freed the Russian nations from the shackles of tsarist rule. the Baltic States fulfilled their national dream of selfgovernment and independence. In the brief period before World War II the people of Latvia.
