Estoniapeaceful Baltic countries. Lithuania managed to reestablish a free government in June 1941 when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union. That government lasted only 6 weeks until the Nazis took over the country. The Baltic states have never again regained their freedom. They suffer religious and political persecution and denial of human rights. A total of onequarter of the combined populations of the Baltic States have been forced into deportation and settlement programs by the Soviet Union. The Balts have not given up on their freedom. Some 30.000 Lithuanian freedom fighters lost their lives in organized resistance between 1940 and 1952.
