Mr. Speaker. the United States of America has long been known as the melting pot of the world. And for good reason. In 1620. the Pilgrims landed on our shores so that they might enjoy freedom of religion. It continued. Figures show that from 1820 through 1971. some 45.533.116 persons emigrated from all countries to the United States. They left. Mr. Speaker. for a variety of reasons. but one of the biggest and most compelling reasons to come was to escape oppression. They wanted to enjoy the one thing that every member of the community of man wants the mostthey wanted their freedom.
