When Saund came to the United States. he was overwhelmed with the freedoms which most of us take for granted. He decided to stay here. where he could openly argue for or against anything. Mostly he spoke to civic groups about Indias effort to throw off British rule. Saunds first familiarity with American politics tested his belief that Americans were open and loving toward all men and would not judge people by their skin color. In 1949. after 4 years of effort. he helped secure citizenship rights for persons of Asiatic ancestry. Soon after he entered an election in Imperial Valley. Calif.. for the position of judge.
