During the Second World War. no people suffered more than did the Jews. Their experience during that holocaust made them ever more determined to have a homeland of their own. With thousands desirous of immigrating to Palestine to found the new homeland waiting in refuge camps. the British. who held a League of Nations mandate over the area since 1922. asked the newly formed United Nations to decide the future of the region. In November of 1947 the U.N. voted to partition Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish States. As the last of the British troops left the area on May 15. 1948. the historic Proclamation of Statehoodwhich had been issued the day before by the Israeli Provisional Governmenttook effect.
