First. many thousands of the members of these communitiesa majorityleft for Israel in the late 1940s and early 1950s and they have been Israeli citizens ever since. Today. few remain. Second. in recent years. because of its size and the many problems it has encountered. the Jewish community of 3 million in the Soviet Union has been a focal point of humanitarian concern. The worldwide attention to the plight of many Soviet Jews and the desire of some to emigrate have tended to overshadow some of the depressing circumstances in which the dwindling Jewish communities in some Arab countries live.
