By the end of 1940. nearly one third of Warsaws population was crowded into less than onetwentieth of the citys area. The daily caloric ration was 184 per individual. sanitation was almost nonexistent. and starvation and disease were rampant. The extermination was not swift enough for the Nazis. though. and deportations to death camps began in July 1942. Sealed off as they were. Jews In the Ghetto found arming for resistance almost impossible. and in 2 months over 300.000 of them were killed there or deported. When the deportation "action" started up again in January 1943. the Jewish Fighter OrganizationZOB--though undermanned and underarmed. resisted with the meager means at their command. Their surprise tactics won them a victory as well as more time to organize. secure arms. and prepare their defenses. April 19. 1943. marked the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
