At the same time. however. it is important to point out a deficiency in the Consular Convention which could have serious consequences for some people. Specifically. I refer to those provisions of the agreement providing protection for American citizens of Polish birth who enter Poland with an American passport and a valid Polish visa. Crucial to this question is the fact that the consular protection as well as the right to leave Poland at will lasts only as long as the entry visa is still valid. In other words. if by oversight or illness such a person overstays his visa period he loses the protection of the Consular Convention and the Polish Peoples Republic is again free to enforce the Polish statutes on citizenship.
