Future AmericanSoviet agreements should be based on mutual respect. yet when the Soviet Union persists in disregarding basic human rights and human dignity. there is no basis for respect. We are a nation which advocates freedom. justice. and human dignity. We cannot degrade ourselves and these ideals by granting trade concessions to the Soviet Union when the very same government flagrantly violates the ideals we cherish. Public outcry has. in the past. influenced the Soviet leaders to alter certain policies. Let us hope that our vocal protest as well as diplomatic actions in this instance will have the same effect. and that those Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate will be able to do so freely rather than for a ransom.
