Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920286895

It seems as though history may be on the verge of repeating itself. and once again the Jewish people are the victims. Also shocking and absolutely despicable is that the U.S.S.R. is demanding a ransomthat is what it is. ransomof from $5.000 to $37.000 for each Jewish person who wants to go to Israel. This is in addition to the now usual ransom fee of $1.000 for emigration permits. renunciation of citizenship. loss of job. forced enlistment in the army. imprisonment and other forms of harassment. The Supreme Soviet meets on September 19th to ratify these ransom fees. Does anyone doubt what the action of the Supreme Soviet will be? This will draw the rope around the necks of Soviet Jews even tighter. They have no schools. their synagogues are closed and they have no cultural life. Now they have no opportunity to emigrate to Israel. The fantastic ransom demands of the Soviet UnionI refuse to call them "fees"-by far exceed the total worth of each Jews property and total earnings over a period of 5 to 8 years. The aver_ age monthly income in the Soviet Union is equivalent to about $153.
