Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920282977

If we are going to have a proper final hearing. it should be one that Is obtained after due process. and that is all the amendment does. I would certainly invite the committee on both sides of the aisle to accept the amendment. if they would. It certainly is within the general framework of the bill. and it does no harmto its principal purpose and general design. I think it makes the bill suitable for me to support. but certainly the bill without such an amendment would put such complete sweeping power in the Attorney General It could not be supported by me. I would then oppose it. not on the grounds of general policy with respect to immigration. but on grounds relating to due process.
