Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920282696

Possibly after we have some experience with this bill. we may even want to tighten it up in certain respects. But I believe this bill is an important step to get at the source of the problem. The chairman of the subcommittee and other members went to detention camps down on the border and asked some of the hundreds of illegal immigrants who were there waiting to be deported whether or not they would have come to this country if they had employment in their own country. and they invariably said "no". By adopting this bill. we are at least going to dry up the attraction. the "bait" that is used to draw these people into this country. In this way I believe we will start to get some control of the problem.
