Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920266750

We must continue to stress our willingness to open our party to those who seek a voice and leadership within its councils. I wish to note that my interest in this regard is not only as a Senator. but is deeply personal. I am the son of immigrants and the product of the slums of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. My escape from poverty and my career in politics have been in large measure a vindication of the principles which we are debating today. I believe that we have moved to broaden and open the Republican Party in recent years.
