Mr. Nedwells letter indicates that 80.000 of the Tartars were sent to Central Asia. The State Department informs me that the actual figure was as high as 200.000nearly the entire Crimean Tartar nation. Moreover. the deaths among the deported people have been estimated at nearly 50 percent. In line with the stand that many of us have taken for civil rights. both here and abroad.
