Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920250419

Mr. Speaker. the second half of June marks a sad anniversary for all those who value freedom. Thirty years ago this month. the Soviet Union invaded Latvia. Lithuania. and Estonia and ruthlessly conquered those republics. Since June 1940 more than onefourth of their populations have been forcibly deported. In June 1941. mass arrests of the Baltic peoples began with more than 150.000 sent to concentration camps in Siberia. For 32 years these people have been unable to exercise one of the most basic of human rightsfreedom of worship. This religious oppression was recently brought to the attention of the world by the selfimmolation of a brave young Lithuanian.
