Prior to that time. there was some abalone harvesting off White Point around 1887. Since there were not many Japanese in the area in 1900. the demand for fresh fish was not that great. However. with the immigration of Japanese from Hawaii. the advent of the picture brides. and the emigration of Japanese from the San Francisco area following the 1906 earthquake. the fishing industry began to boom. The Port of Los Angeles eventually had 16 fishing companies employing 60 fishermen. They later split. with eight remaining at the Port of Los Angeles. four going to San Pedro. one to Playa del Rey. one to Oxnard. and two to San Diego.
