This was not the first time that a German printer and publisher wrote himself into history. for Peter Zenger. the founder of the independent newspaper. the New York Weekly Journal. was tried for libel in 1735. and the case became the first great fight for freedom of the press in America. During the 19th century. German immigration outdistanced all others and reached surprising heights. From 1846 to 1854. a period embracing the illfavored German Revolution of 18481849. almost 900.000 Germans came to Americaan extremely large number for those days. Over half of them arrived in the years 1852 to 1854.
