Speech #920210040

I said of Israel and her people: They are a small and democratic nation with a long and tortured history of inequality. persecution and outright slaughter. After 20 centuries of homelessness they have returned with the sanction and blessing of the international community to the land where their history began and from which they have never been entirely severed. They have reclaimed the desert. built cities in the sand. and rehabilitated hundreds of thousands of their refugee brethren. many of the refugees from Arab countries. Time and again they have appealed to their neighbors to conclude with them an honorable and lasting peace. only to be rebuffed. attacked. and threatened with destruction. Those remarks ring as true today as they did then.
