Speech #920206712

And for many Soviet Jews who have not been fully assimilated into the Soviet way of life. a new awareness. a new sense of Jewishness. has developed. The lack of cultural and religious items and the lack of synagogues are deeply resented deprivations. The Soviet Jew. particularly the younger one. is often desirous of starting a new life outside of the Soviet Union most frequently in Israel. This development has stimulated a wave of applications for permission to emigrate. These courageous people have risked their jobs. their personal freedom. and their physical safety to go to Israel. And thousands are being allowed to leave.
