Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920203400

Iraq. other Arab States and. of course. the Soviet Union. The latter is the most important because it involves some 3 million Jews. I have today written to a young Jewish activist in Moscow who has recently been released from jail. where he was sent as a result of his efforts to emigrate legally to Israel. I sent him a book. a collection of Shalom Aleichem short stories as a reminder that he is not alone and that we in America are aware of the efforts of Soviet Jewry to obtain basic human rights. We have no way of knowing how many Soviet Jews wish to emigrate to Israel or to the United States and elsewhere. But we do know the number is great and that as it grows. as more and more Soviet Jews seek emigration visas. more and more find themselves in Soviet jails. And those not thrown in jail are prosecuted and persecuted in other ways. They may find themselves out of a job or demoted or subjected to other forms of retaliation.
