Mr. Speaker. last week I introduced a bill. H.R. 14034. to repeal the meat quota law. The American housewife is paying through the nose for protectionist practices. The United States is much more protectionist than people imagine. A dramatic example of how people pay for restrictive trade measures can be seen in the rising price of meat. This month the administration announced that meat imports for 1972 would be limited to a meager 1.24 billion pounds. less than onethirtieth of the total amount of meat Americans buy each year. In spite of phase II. the wholesale price index for February showed an increase of 0.7 percent.
