The simple fact is that the retail boycott. successfully implemented against the grape growers for 3 years and presently being used against iceberg lettuce growers and certain California wineries. is the only means which farm workers can use to organize themselves and to seek a redress of grievances. On the one hand the UFW is being persecuted by an antlunion alliance known as the Free Marketing Council. an organization described as a coalition of growers. shippers. and chainstores. and strongly supported by the American Farm Bureau Federation. righttowork committees. and agribusiness interests. This wellfinanced campaign is designed to end the UFWs activities. especially the use of the boycott. and to permit a renewal of the deplorable treatment of migrant farmworkers and their families. These narrow. special interests realize that the years of exploiting farmworkers is ending and they are now resorting to gutter tactics to strip the UFW of its one effective weapon. the boycott. and to end their accountability to the American public over the degradation and poor treatment of farmworkers. On the other hand is the illconceived action of the National Labor Relations Board in attempting to secure an injunction against the UFWs secondary boycott activities.
