Ukrainian exiles keep alive these treasured hopes. In the Ukraine itself. more than 30 prominent intellectuals have been arrested and sentenced over the past 10 years by ruthless officials who resent and fear the nationalistic sentiments expressed by these freedom lovers. The same energy and selfless devotion to the cause of democracy has been the legacy of Ukrainian immigrants to this countryfrom their heroic contributions to the army of Gen. George Washington to their daily contributions to our way of life In America. It is my great honor to pay tribute to our citizens of Ukrainian ancestry and to their kinsmen who have distinguished themselves by their courage and have endeared themselves to free people everywhere.
