Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920139338

Each week in the news we get matteroffact. almost cheerful reports of how few Americans are dying in the war in Vietnamthe "low average weekly body count" as compared with some previous timenow that "the war is winding down." What we do not hear is that each day the war goes on. 300 Vietnamese are killedplus more Cambodians and Laotians. We do not hear that the average tonnage of bombs dropped by the United States is higher now than ever before. We are not told of the constantly rising average monthly number of new war refugees in Indochina. "Now that war is winding down"-how reassuring that sounds. Winding down to what? Until when?
