Many citizens responded to this threat by urging Members of Congress to vote against the proposal. The proponents of the resolution severely weakened their case. when only minutes before the end of debate. they offered an amendment to change the wording from "nondenominational prayer" to "voluntary prayer or meditation." We should not tamper. on a spurofthemoment decision. with our Nations most precious heritage. the Bill of Rights. In this case.
