Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920121058

Our nation was occupied with other things among those weeks and our domestic concerns caused us to look the other way while people died and the Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest. It Is too late now to make amends for our failure to act. We opened our doors to the refugees and we keep alive their hopes for freedom. but we can never fully compensate for our omission and our failure to respond at the historic moment. At the present time the U.S. Is engaged in a series of negotiations with the Communist government of Hungary leading to the settlement of the outstanding claims and counterclaims of the two governments.
