Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920118481

President. I should like to address a few questions to the distinguished chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. I have just had an opportunity to study briefly the report of the committee in connection with the Foreign Assistance Act of 1971. and I am particularly interested in the section dealing with the suspension of assistance to Pakistan and the $250 million established as a fund to aid refugees. With respect to the latter question. the newspapers have been filled with stories of the continuing exodus of refugees from East Pakistan. When I was there a few months ago. it was perfectly evident that people are still continuing to flee East Pakistan for the refugee camps in India. We have established an amount of relief assistance for food for East Pakistan and an amount for India. However. the conditions are quite fluid.
