Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920104023

They were temporarily placed in territories then belonging to the Third Reichconsisting of presentday Austria. the Federal Republic. and Democratic Republic of Germany. Those who were relocated in the Federal Republic of Germany and those who remained in Austria. received some measure of compensation from the Federal Republic of Germany. Compensation. however. was not extended to those displaced persons who left Austria to emigrate to the United States and became citizens of this country. I can see no justice in the denial of compensation simply because people chose to emigrate to the United States. Their brothers and sisters who lost property under the same circumstances and who remained in Germany and Austria have received their compensation. The basic right of compensation stems from losses sustained in being forced to flee from their homes during and after World War II.
