The ill treatment of Soviet Jews cannot be shown through use of statistics or data. Documented evidence on the number of Jews who have lost their jobs or whose homes have been searched for traces of illegal Hebrew books is not available. Yet. we do have reports from those who have had the opportunity to visit the Soviet Union and from Jews who have taken a great many risks and have successfully emigrated from Russia. And we have all read of the arrests that have taken place and of the trials of Soviet Jews for alleged skyjacking attempts. Our State Department has said of these trials: It would appear that the defendants (are being) tried for actions which are not even considered a crime in most countries.
