Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920087191

Mr. Speaker. recently I learned of a new citizen who came face to face with one of the ironies. an inexcusable oversight of our American freedoms. This woman was an immigrant fulfilling a lifetime dream. She had worked. studied. and waited until she could finally become an American citizen. Before the ceremony of initiating a. new citizen. a judge reminded all in the courtroom that no pictures were to be taken during the actual ceremony. This immigrant and all the others in the room waited patiently until the end. Afterwards the beaming grandmother gathered her grandchildren to be photographed with the certificate showing that she is now a citizen in this great. free country. However. she quickly learned of one of the many ironies of democracy when a courtroom officer informed the photographer that he was not allowed to photograph the document.
