You will recall Mr. Speaker. that 11 defendants received terms of 4 to 5 years last December in Leningradand the death sentences of two of them were commuted to 15 yearsone received 10 years in a Leningrad courtmartial in January and nine received terms of up to 3 years in Leningrad in May of this year with four getting terms of up to 3 years in Riga last month. The principal charges against most of those convicted were based on their involvement with their coreligionists who sought to teach their children in Yiddish and Hebrew. their public expression of the difficulties that Jews encounter every day in the Soviet Union. their efforts to lead a Jewish cultural life in the U.S.S.R. and lastly their attemptspursuant to the very law of the U.S.S.R.-to emigrate from the Soviet Union to Israel. The Soviet Union continues the history of Russian antisemitic policies just as they were conducted under the Czars. Today however. the Soviet Union gives these pogroms the color of law by using its courts to lynch instead of its cossacks.
