We must intensify our relief efforts and insure that relief supplies reach the victims for whom -they are intended. Furthermore. the influence of our economic assistance should be applied to encourage genuine reconciliation. U.S. interests could be affected if the explosive refugee situation were allowed to ignite and threaten the stability of the whole Indian subcontinent. But beyond consideration of foreign policy. this episode raises again the question of the credibility of our Governments word. Coming as it does in the midst of the "Pentagon Papers" controversy. it reinforces the concern which many of us have about our leadersRepublicans or Democratsbeing candid with the American people.
