On June 15. 1940. the Soviets occupied the country. and after a "rigged" election. Lithuania was declared a constituent republic of the U.S.S.R. just 2 months later. And within a year. Lithuania lost about 45.000 people as they fled. were arrested. or deported. Some 30.000 members of the nations intelligentsia were deported to Siberia on the night of June 14. 1941. and 5.000 political prisoners were executed when the Soviet forces hastily retreated under German attack.
