Speaker. on June 15 of each year. we are sadly reminded of the plight of those who have been subjugated by the Soviet Union into positions of literal slavery. This is the occasion of Baltic Freedom Day. and I think it appropriate that we join those of Lithuanian. Estonian. and Latvian heritage in commemorating the fate of their countrymen who were deported by the Soviets 31 years ago in an effort to destroy their sense of nationality. These efforts to destroy this sense of heritage. of cultural and ethnic unity. continue even today. These nations which had so briefly tasted the joys of true freedom and national determination. have lived on in the hearts of those who enjoy this heritage. however. and no amount of forced exile and subjugation will put out this bright candle.
