Commissioner General of UNRWA. and Mr. Jan van Wijik. the UNRWA Liaison Officer at the United Nations in New York. Sir John Rennie informed us that UNRWA. which works with approximately 1.5 million refugees. now faces a financial crisis. The estimated deficit for next year is between $6 and $7 million. The Commissioner General suggested that one way of alleviating UNRWAs financial plight would be to secure donations of basic commodities needed for use in the refugee camps. However. most basic commoditiesincluding rice. wheat. and flourare already donated by the United States and Western European countries. Sugar is the only international commodity which UNRWA must buy on the world market.
