And what a tragedy it is to see this talented. gifted people. who have known too much suffering in their long history. subjected again to the travails of persecution. Because I have compassion for the Jews of the Soviet Union. as indeed I have compassion for all suffering humanity. I should like to add my voice to the many requests and demands that Soviet Jews be given the right to worship freely and that they also be given the right to emigrate to any country of their choice. Let us hope and pray that this gesture of protest will. when added to the millions of others. create a pressure upon the Soviet Government that will compel the leadership to respond to the voice of humanity and grant the Jews of the Soviet Union freedom of religion and freedom of choice wherever they want to live out their lives.
