Mr. President. I wish to express my strong support for the bill for the relief of Soviet Jews. introduced by the Senator from New Jersey . which I cosponsored. The bill would grant special immigrant visas to 30.000 Soviet Jews and their families seeking admission to the United States to avoid religious persecution. Last December. at the time of the Leningrad trials. I was among those who voiced their outrage at the harsh sentences. including two death penalties. initially handed down. After all. these people had acted not out of malicious motivation or out of the desire to embarrass or damage any nation.
