Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920026884

Though we may well have to look forward to future pronouncements regarding relations with the American people rather than its government. the fact remains that the logjam of a generation has been broken. President Nixon has now responded in kind. and I applaud his strong initiative. Yesterday. the President announced that we will expedite visas for individuals and groups who might wish to travel to the United States from Mainland China. U.S. currency controls will also be relaxed so that Chinese citizens can use American currency in the course of commerce. U.S. vessels and aircraft will be permitted to carry Chinese cargoes between nonChinese ports.
